Carl Butler & Pearl Don't Let Me Cross Over

Here we have the LP that launched a career. This is the LP that has Carl & Pearl's only number 1 hit, "Don't Let Me Cross Over". Released as a single in late 1962 it climbed to the number one spot where it actually fell out only to move back into the coveted spot two more times for a total of 11 weeks at the top! It was so hot, it only needed four weeks from date of release to hit number 1! Pretty good feat !
Carl wrote four of the tunes on this LP, ("Grief in My Heart", "I Know You Don't Love Me", "I'm A Prisoner Of Love" and "I Like To Pretend") and Pearl co-wrote one, "I Know Why I Cry".
Here is the song list for this great Columbia Records LP:
Side 1:
"Don't Let Me Cross Over"
"I Know What It Means To Be Lonesome"
"River Of Tears"
"I'll Cry Again Tomorrow"
"I Like To Pretend"

Side 2:
"I Know Why I Cry"
"Grief In My Heart"
"I Know You Don't Love Me"
"Wonder Drug"

Here are the lyrics and chords to Carl & Pearl's greatest song:
Don't Let Me Cross Over
Writer & Composer: Penny Jay

INTRO: [C] Don't let me cross [G] over [D] love's cheating [G] line.
[G] I'm tempted my darling, to steal you a-[C] way
Don't let me cross [G] over, stay out of my [D] way
You know that I [G] love you, and I'm not the stealin' [C] kind
But I'm faced with [G] heartaches, at [D] love's cheating [G] line.
CHORUS
Don't let me cross over, love's cheating [C] line
You belong to a-[G] nother and could never be [D] mine
I know one step [G] closer, would be heaven di-[C] vine
Don't let me cross [G] over, [D] love's cheatin' [G] line.
I tried to forget you, but what else can I do
When your eyes keep saying, that you love me, too
I know if I lose you, not a dream will I have left
I don't want to cheat, dear, but I can't help myself.
CHORUS

Enjoy !!!

Keep On Honky Tonkin'!
